Overview

Resting comfortably on the banks of the seasonal Mohlabetsi River in the Greater Kruger’s Balule Nature Reserve sits the inimitable Nyala Safari Lodge. Distinct in design, this 5-bedroomed lodge offers thatched accommodation in iconic rondawel style, an archetype of accommodation in the GreaterĀ Kruger.

Nyala’s main area has a wrap-around viewing deck mimicking the curves of the river and runs the full length of the lodge. The entire lodge is shaded by weeping Boer-beans and ancient Jackalberry trees, ensuring respite from the heat during the sizzling summer months. The main area comprises a swimming pool with decking and seating, boma, lounge and open-plan kitchen and viewing decks with hammocks. In front of the lodge is a thriving waterhole, which is best viewed from the boma area.

Dotted among the riparian vegetation are 5 well-appointed chalets, furnished with sandy beige interiors and earthy tones designed to harmonise with the Balule Bushveld. Expect Egyptian cotton linen, light wooden furniture, air conditioning, and ornate bathrooms with deep-set luxurious baths and indoor and outdoor showers.

Activities include two game drives a day which depart at first light and late afternoon when the nocturnal predators are most active. For safari-goers wanting to capture the spirit of adventure, there are boma dinners available.

Nyala Safari Lodge is located in the famed Balule Nature Reserve, a Big 5 reserve sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park. If you’re self-driving, from Johannesburg it takes an estimated 6 hours by road to reach Nyala Safari Lodge.

While in the reserve, you’ll find the roads easily navigable and well-signposted. En route to the lodge you may even spot wildlife. There is also the option of both scheduled and private road transfers from Johannesburg. To arrange a road transfer, please contact our reservations team.

The majority of international guests choose to fly into Hoedspruit-Eastgate Airport, which connects directly to major airports in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Most of these flights arrive in Hoedspruit around midday, which leaves enough time to join the afternoon game drive (most game drives depart around 16:30).

Your host from Nyala Safari Lodge will collect you from Hoedspruit Airport (40 minutes from the lodge). There are also flights to Phalaborwa Airport, which is about 2.5 hours from the lodge.
